Sines, Porto Covo and Vila Nova de Milfontes—Let yourself be surprised by the natural beauty of the Southwestern Coast of Alentejo, stroll in cozy and picturesque small villages, and discover the birthplace of Vasco da Gama.
On this tour you will have the opportunity to discover the southern part of Costa Alentejana. Passing the pretty villages of Carvalhal, Melides and the scenic Santo André Lagoon (photo stop) this tour will start as a time capsule as we visit Sines, the birthplace of Vasco Gama, Portuguese greatest explorer.
Today one of the biggest ports for goods in Europe, Sines was formerly a fishing harbor located in a quiet bay with a mild climate, protected by a medieval castle from pirates and enemies who tried to attack the village from the sea. Although small in size, Sines hides an enchanting historical center with its parallel streets that surround the statue of its local hero, churches with unexpected pieces of art, beautiful belvederes, and an inscription on the house where Vasco da Gama was born.
Our next stop will be the small fishing village of Porto Côvo, characterized by its white houses with blue stripes, located in the Natural Park of Sudoeste Alentejano. It is hard to imagine that in 1780 there were only four houses in this little paradise where time passes so slowly.
Next, we will drive south to Vila Nova de Milfontes, where we will have free time for lunch in one of the many trendy restaurants (not included), before a short walk to see the town busiest streets fulfilling with life, and a last stop near the imposing fortress, where we can enjoy a breathtaking view over the Mira River and the Coast.
